Ocean plastic cleanup
Plastic accumulating in our oceans and on our beaches has become a global crisis. At current rates, plastic is expected to outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050. Our cleanup efforts take place in both Africa and Asia. The work is carried out by Empower in collaboration with local partner organizations.
Empower operates in more than 15 countries, incentivizing plastic waste collection, kick-starting waste management systems, and building transparency in the supply chain. All plastic cleanup is carried out by local workers living in underprivileged communities.
By putting a value on the plastic, the waste pickers are given an opportunity to multiply their regular income, which translates into better health, better education for their children, and security.
